My Chevelle is a 1969 SS 396, with a Muncie 4-speed, 12 bolt rear end, power steering and power brakes. I purchased this car in October of 2002 and it had obviously lead a rough life. It had a 305 c.i. motor and a Saginw 4-speed which I thought would hold me over for a little while.
In the winter of 2002 I decided to rebuild the suspension with polygraphite bushings and I also added factory front disc brakes, Edelbrock shocks, Hotchkis swaybar and Global West rear control arms and OPG 2" drop springs.
I drove the car during the spring of 2003 but it didn't take long for me to see that the old body and paint work just wasn't presentable. In August 2003 I decided to start pulling the car apart and as expected I found rust and old bodywork in all the usual areas. I had my friend Mark Mullins do the metal work which included installing new quarter skins, inner wheel wells, (hand made) inner quarter structures, new trunk floor, replacing corners on doors, bottom of the fenders, welding up the heater box hole in the firewall and a few other miscellaneous places on the car. He finished his work in December and I brought the car back home and finished stripping the paint and had all of the loose parts media blasted.
In February Mike Willard took the car and started on the body work, within a month he was finished and then started painting. In 3 weeks I had the car home and began putting it back together with new trim, gasket seals etc., new windshield w/antenna, and new back glass. I wanted a set of wheels that were different, so a set of American Racing Salt Flat Specials were ordered - 17 x 8 front and 17 x 9 rears, 235/45-17 and 285/40-17 BF Goodrich tires were installed.
Next an Alpine CD player, Alpine amplifier and Pioneer 10" subwoofer along with Sony Xplod speakers for a great sounding stereo.
There is Acura Integra bucket seats in place of the factory buckets and the bench seat shifter hump has been installed. Pro-Auto Interiors are recovering the interior in suede and leather, and should be ready October 2004.
I plan on adding after market A/C & heat, a serpentine belt system this winter and Baer 4-wheel 13" disc brakes with tall spindles and negative roll system, and possibly a super charger. Currently the car drives and handles very well with the dual 11" spa/fans that keep the engine running cool in 90 degree heat.
I would like to thank all who helped with the rebuild including: my wife Heather, Roy Story, Mark Mullins, Chris Ammons, Mike Willard, Ralph Egelston, Gordon Treece, Craig Brooks, Harold, Catlett and most of all my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
