Well, let me tell you a little about my 68 el camino.
I bought it in Aug of 1987. I payed 1500 dollars for it. It was a mess when I got it.
The engine was shot, the transmission lost third gear, the rear end was shot, the front windshield was broken, the seat was all torn up, and it was missing a lot of things like emblems and chrome pieces. It was ready for the junk yard.I have done numberous changes to it over the years. The El Camino used to be originally blue, but has been white ever since I have owned it. I had a black vinyl top put on it about five years ago.
Right now it has:
- The El Camino orginally had a two speed powerglide.
- The El Camino was built in Fremont CA in the last week of Novermber
- 1967.
- The el camino was orginally all medium blue. Inside and out.
- The el camino also has power brakes. Disc brakes in the front. Someone added the power disc brakes to it before I owned it.
- The rear end is out of a " 69" chevelle SS 396 car.
- 350 engine with flat top pistons
- crower cam shaft with a 474 lift
- edlebrook performer manifold
- holley 600 cfm fourbarrel carb
- 1.6 comp cams roller tip rocker arms
- black jack headers with dual exhaust
- two flowmaster mufflers with a cross over
- 12 bolt rear with 3:55 gearing (out of a 396 SS chevelle)
- turbo 350 transmission with a serious shift kit
- The engine has chrome valve covers, chrome air cleaner, and chrome radiator top cover.
The el camino runs about 15 flat in the quarter mile at about 93 mph. It is a little slow right now because the cyclinder heads that are on it are small. They are 1.72 valves and I hope to have 1.94 closed camber heads on it soon. The only thing I don't like about the car is the gas milage. It is terrible. I get about 11 miles to the gallon. I think that the jets in the carb are too big and I need to change them.
It is the first vehicle I have ever owned, and I will never get rid of it. I love everything about it. I use the elcamino everyday to commute back and forth to work, and drive it to Parker Arizona, and Las Vegas when I go on vacation.
