1969 Chevelle SS

Garry Liddell

TC member #2305

I have been a Chevelle enthusiast ever since high school when I had my first; a 65 SS 4 speed. Back then, the words "numbers match" weren’t even used, and we didn't realize what the heck we had, other than a really cool car for cruisin in. When I think back, that 65 SS was most likely All original since it was only eleven years old when I had it. Only if I had the foresight. You’ve heard that before, right?

Between the 65 SS and my current 69 SS, which I am quick to answer when people ask me if it's real or not, "I really don’t know" other than it was, and still is a Chevelle, all the right signs are there. A lot can happen over thirty five years, and when it gets right down to it, I love the car either way. Anyway, back to between the 65 and current time, I have proudly had the pleasure to own and enjoy a 66 malibu, and a 68 malibu convertible. All three of my Chevelles prior to the current 69 have been small block cars. I had always wanted a big block.

This 69's original engine is long gone, as are so many of these beautiful Chevelles. It now has an LS6 454 block and was built to be similar to the LS6 that was availible the year after this car was built. It has 10.2-1 forged pistons, an Isky .620 Solid Roller, rectangle port Edelbrock performer RPM heads, RPM intake, 2" Hooker Super Comps connecting to a 3" H pipe and then through 3" 40 series flowmasters and finally 2.5" tails. The engine was professionaly built by Dave Chun of Super Tune in Vancouver Wash. Dave said with a smile she's good for a little over 500 HP, without the NOS. Other changes that have been made are the Richmond 5 speed and 3.08-1 posi. It had 3.73-1 gears in it before, but because of the low 1st gear in the Richmond, you couldn't do anything with it. I am also running 285/35ZR18's on the rear, and 245/40ZR18's on the front to give it it's mean stance. Although I love the look of the original rally wheels, these Budniks look PDG.

I have yet to fill the NOS bottle until I really get to know the car. And then, who knows, perhaps fill it once, see what she will do on the track, then just go back to my street cruisin with a big friendly smile.
