1970 SS 454

Danny & Kaye Fletcher

Team Chevelle Gold Member #235

When I was in High school, I was a year behind my best friend up the street. After he graduated from school his mother went to our local Chevy dealer and bought him a Brand Spanking New Forest Green 1970 SS396.

She called me and ask if I would help her out and go with her to pick up the car and drive it home to suprise him, man I was out of the door so fast I didn't even say good-bye. The drive home took all of 15 minutes but I remember it like it was yesterday.
We where all completely in awe of this "Forest Green 396", man that thing would run.
One day my wife and I were going down the road and I spotted a green 454 Chevelle in a front yard with FOR SALE on the windshield. Well I almost crashed getting around the block, went up to the door and asked the younger kid "how much"? He said what ya got, and I told him $1,700 and a 750 Honda. He said OK! Man I was shaking as I wrote that check! He said he knew the guy who still had the original engine and transmission, did I want his phone #? What a stroke of luck!

When i got the Chevelle it was being raced, running low 11's, not good for cruising but very good for nailing you to the seat. I wanted more of a driveable car though so I got in touch with the guy who had my original engine. Myself and my brother went up to Dallas to check it out, sure enough the engine #'s matched my VIN#'s - I was ecstatic, I knew it would authenticate my car! So I had to buy the Camaro for $1,800, and tow it back to Waco. I had it sitting by the house, and my postman asked me if I wanted to sell the Car. I said sure, without the engine and trans. He said that was just what he was looking for as he wanted a small block Camaro! I sold it to him for $1,500 less my parts, he has since been working on it and has it primered.

My interior was in mint condition, I put a package tray and a couple of inserts in the seats. Rebuilt the engine and slapped it in, same with the transmission. A close friend of mine painted it in 1985 for $800 bucks, and I took those pics last September. Not bad, 15 years for 800 bucks, I showed it for awhile and won a bunch of trophies, got tired and stopped - teenager now drives, have to work on his Chevy truck, but he's learning. This year we have started back on the Chevelle with new carpet, door panels ect.

OK here's one for ya, my door panels say Malibu not SS on the little plate. I guess they ran out that day. This Chevelle was built in Arlington Texas -near Dallas, about 110 miles from here, and I know the original owner and the kid I got it from is now a doctor! So I'm the third owner but it has always been a Waco Car. I have another buddy that said he actually borrowed the car from Larry-the first owner, and took his wife out on there first date in it, he owns a LS6 Silver Chevelle now!

So this is the story behind My Chevelle.

Me and My wife have put a lot of work into the Car but it's worth every minute when you drive around and people wave, give you the thumbs up, and of course ask how much do you want for it!
