1970 Chevelle Convertible

I started a serious search for a convertible of any kind several years ago. As I looked around the various local shows, I quickly realized that drop-tops in any condition weren't inexpensive. I narrowed my search to a 70 Chevelle Convertible, knowing it was a much sought after body style and year of manufacture. The car I ultimately purchased was found on the internet back in September, 2000.

The car was owned by a fellow in Nashua, New Hampshire. A long road trip for me living in central Ohio, but the description of the car and the price made it worth serious consideration for a road trip. I finally got to see the car in October of 2000, and promptly settled on a price, and loaded it on a trailer for the trip home.

My 1970 Malibu Convertible was born on the second week of December, at the Baltimore plant. It was sent to Gordon Sutler Chevrolet, in Lowell, Mass. (Dealer #112, Zone 32). The car is no longer "stock," but interestingly, there were several high-performance options ordered onto this car, that were usually reserved for the "SS" muscle machines. It came with bucket seats and console (Pearl White), heavy duty suspension package, sway bars front and rear, power steering, power brakes, 350ci 4-bbl motor, power top, and dual exhaust. Over the course of its life, SS hood with stripes were added, as well as an M-20 4-Speed Transmission, full gauge dash, SS wheels, SS fender emblems, grille and rear SS pad.

I spent this past winter completely disassembling the car to clean and Por-15 every square inch of the frame and sub-body. The car is as clean and straight as it could be, short of a frame-off restoration. That may be in the future, but for now, I'm going to enjoy my Malibu "SS-ED" Drop-Top.
