El Camino Body Parts Interchangeability
Additional information is presented on the GM A-body Interchange Pages.
Doors: '64-'65, '66-'67
Bed Trim: '64-'67.
Wheel Well & Rocker Trim: '64-'65, '66-'67.
Fenders, Hood & Grille: Each year had its own, but 64-65 can be swapped as a complete assembly. Same for 66-67.
All 1968 Chevelle fenders (coupe, wagon, convertible, and El Camino) are the same.
1968 and 1969 fenders are very similar and can interchange, but the side marker light holes are slightly different.
1970 El Camino and Chevelle wagon fenders are the same, but they do not interchange with non-wagon Chevelles.
1971-1972 El Camino and Chevelle wagon fenders are all the same, but they do not interchange with non-wagon Chevelles, and they are different than the 1970s.
1968 and 1969 El Camino/Chevelle hoods are the same except for the hood hinge bolt holes. If mounting a 1969 (plain or SS) hood on a 1968, then use 1969 hood hinges. If mounting a 1968 (plain or SS) hood on a 1969, then use 1968 hood hinges. In other words, use the hood hinges that came with the hood !
All 1970 through 1972 El Camino/Chevelle hoods will interchange.
1968 through 1972 El Camino doors will interchange (but the '68s have the door lock post in a different location). Wagons and 4-door sedans have a different side window frame.
1968 and 1969 El Camino quarter panels are the same except that the 1969s have a hole for the side marker light.
1970-1972 El Camino quarter panels are very similar to the 1968s, except for a small area around the tail lights. This is only a concern with full GM quarter panels. The quarter panel skins do not extend into the area where the tail lights are different, so all 1968-1972 quarter panel skins are the same (except for the side marker light holes on the 1969s).
All 1968-1972 El Camino tailgates will interchange. The 1969-1972 tailgates are all identical, and have the backup lights in the tailgate. 1968 tailgates have no backup lights (in 1968, they are in the rear bumper).
All 1968-1972 El Camino glass is the same.
1968 El Camino/Chevelle front bumpers are all the same.
1969 El Camino/Chevelle front bumpers are all the same, but different than other years.
1970 El Camino and Monte Carlo front bumpers are the same. The 1970 Chevelle bumpers are different - they have rectangular, not round, marker lights.
All 1971 and 1972 El Camino and Chevelle front bumpers are all the same.
The 1971-1972 El Camino front bumpers are different than the 1970 El Camino bumpers.
All 1968-1972 El Camino rear bumpers will interchange, but the 1968s have backup lights in the bumper. 1969-1972 bumpers have reflectors in that location.
All 1968-1972 El Camino bed trim, window/door trim, and wheel well moldings will interchange.
1968 and 1969 El Camino tailgate trim is the same. The upper and lower pieces will also interchange.
1970-1972 El Camino tailgate trim is the same (but different than 1969). The upper and lower pieces will also interchange.
1971 and 1972 El Camino headlight surrounds are the same, but different than the Chevelle's.
The 1971-1972 headlight bezels are different.
The 1971-1972 turn signal bezels are different. They also do not interchange with the non-wagon Chevelle.
1968 and 1969 El Camino and Chevelle wagon tail lights are all the same (bezels and lenses interchange).
1970-1972 El Camino and Chevelle wagon tail lights are all the same. They look similar to the 1969s, but the '70-'72 units are wider on the tailgate side.
All 1968 and 1969 El Camino/Chevelle core supports are basically the same.
1971 and 1972 El Camino core supports are basically the same.
