This is an authentic 1968 SS 396 black plate California Chevelle built in Freemont, CA with protecto plate intact. Vin # 13837 8Z156927. The car matches the cowl tag for interior, paint, production location and proves the car is an authentic SS.I bought the car a year and a half ago to build a project with my son and am selling the car to build another project. The car has a numbers matching drive train including engine and transmission. This car was very close to “all original” prior to the modifications I installed which are bolt in only. There was no cutting or fabrication to the car whatsoever and the upgraded components could be replaced with the stock (or new old stock I have) in a weekend or two. I have the original distributor, carb, owners manual, keys, plates, jack, spare, valve covers, steering wheel.
Original configuration:
The car is original Matador Red which was redone within the last 5 years or so. Has the 4 piston front brakes, factory AC and Turbo 400. F41 suspension with swaybar. The original engine is the 325HP 396. Has original AM radio. All original sheet metal, this car is rust free.Modifications
Mofified Engine
1973 454 .040 bore, roller cam .600, 600 lift, roller rockers and lifters, 3/8 pushrods, edelbrock water pump, chrome air gap intake, Holley 770 street avenger, MSD ignition with rev limiter, march pulleys. The engine was professionally built, balanced, machined etc. This is not a garage rebuild and the estimated between 400- 500HP Runs fine on pump gas, does not over heat and has pretty good manors for the build. I have $7K in the engine alone and receipts for all work. No leaks of any kind, truly a professional build.Original Engine
396 325 HP, the engine ran strong before removal, no smoking or signs or trouble. The dealer I bought the car from told me it was rebuilt 5 years ago but I have no documentation to prove it. I did do a compression check and all cylinders were 180 PSI + or – 5 %. The engine is truly all original with the exception of the carb and distributor and I have the originals carb ,dist and coil go with the car.Trans
Rebuilt original Turbo 400, red clutches, sprag gear, pump etc. The unit was professionally rebuilt at a local trans shop. 2500 RPM Hughes stall convertor, new flexplate. New U joints in drive shaft. I have stock convertor also, goes with car.Rear End
12 bolt with new Eaton 3:55 posi, new axles, gears seals etc. The entire unit was professionaly rebuilt by a local shop. Have stock components in a box, goes with car.Suspension
Replaced with stock rubber every bushing in front and rear, ball joints and tie rods. Eibach springs, Varishock 16 way adjustable shocks. The car handles 100% better with these mods, I am impressed in the improvements and it really handles a lot better. The shocks can be adjusted to suit your preferences and really tame the car in the corners. I have new original type coil springs, which go with car.Radiator
Rebuilt radiator, original style gone over and resealed and pressure tested by shop. Car runs 190F, no overheating issues like many big blocks.Brakes
Replaced all rubber lines, pads, rebuilt 4 piston calipers with the stainless sleeve inserts, new master cylinder, proportioning valve. The 4 piston brakes are very rare and these stop the car well. New bearings and rotors were resurfaced. The car has great brakes.
Wheels
Eagle Alloy polished aluminum, rear 275/40/17, front 245/45/17 I also have the original style rally wheels seen in the pictures with new tires (about 300 miles on them)AC
Replaced condenser (have original condenser , poa valve and compressor), compressor, poa valve conversion, all new lines and expansion valve. Evaporator was cleaned flushed, resealed.
Replaced gas tank (American made unit), sending unit and wiring harness. Tank and straps were clear coated and installed with NOS NPD tank kit.
New engine wiring harness (Painless), voltage regulator (I have original).
Entire underside was painted with chip resistant paint and is as clean as the engine compartment. This car could easily be converted back to original with minimal effort. You could also enjoy the car as it is built now and retain the investment value with the original parts in the garage. In my opinion this car is much more fun to drive as it is now, it handles and accelerates a lot better than the stock configuration.
I have over $45K invested in the car and a stack of reciepts to document the build. Name: Scott Milligan
