Upside Down? Seated?

M.H. :   I recently replaced the front suspension and springs on a 1970 396 SS El Camino. Now, the springs rub on the inside edge of the frame spring pocket- not bad but enough to give that annoying squawk. I did not notice the old springs location, or if they were "real close" or not. I am wondering if anyone has seen this problem, if this is in some instances normal, or if I screwed this up somehow. Could I have possibly swapped the left and right lower arms? Is that possible? The arms are not bent or damaged, and the springs were purchased new from a reputable company and were the same "physical size" as the old ones.

B.T. :   Did you put the right side up on the spring? The springs I just put in had one end painted white, which had to be installed at the top. The top of the spring is flattened and the bottom is not. Did the spring get seated into the groove at the top of the frame pocket?

S._. :   The springs also need to be properly seated in the control arm. The end of the bottom coil has to be located between the two small holes in the spring pocket. The coil should cover one hole but not the second. You may need to clean the pocket to see the two holes, sometimes they fill in with dirt and gunk.
