A Pressing Problem, But No Tapping, Please.
T_: How difficult is it to rebuild a Muncie transmission?. The one I have is hard to get into second gear and I was told it was the brass synchronization rings that need to be replaced.BT: It's not hard if you are fairly mechanically inclined and have a good diagram to follow. It is a lot easier if you have access to a hydraulic press. The gears are pressed onto the main shaft and they are tight, no tapping with a hammer here. New synchros, seals, and bearings are about $125 in a kit.
W_: I recently rebuilt my M21 Muncie. The hardest part was locating all of the parts. I ended up running all around town (and I live in L.A.). If you have an older Muncie, you should replace the pivot shaft that is on the side cover. The newer Muncies have a shaft that has a shoulder on it that prevents the shaft from working loose and falling into the transmission. The shaft holds the linkage (inside the transmission) that prevents you from putting the transmission into two gears at the same time. Take your time, it isn't that difficult. When doing this sort of project, the person who is going to put the transmission together should be the person who takes it apart. Common sense, but always do it that way.
