Depends On The Flywheel

B_: I'm putting together a 1970 Chevelle LS6, 4 speed car. I can't find the right starter. The aluminum nose one won't fit.

SC: What size flywheel are you running? There are two Chevy starters, one for a 123/4 inch 153 tooth flywheel, and the other for a 14 inch 168 tooth flywheel. All big blocks except L88 use a 14 inch flywheel. The bellhousings are also different and require their own starter. The "nose" of the starter will have to be changed to engage the flywheel teeth. I have a feeling you are trying to use the wrong starter with the wrong bellhousing. A 14 inch flywheel uses a 3899621 bellhousing, a 12 3/4 inch flywheel uses a 3858403 bellhousing for proper starter and flywheel alignment.
