Is It A Coil, Pickup Coil, or Module Problem?

SC: I have a High Energy Ignition problem. My car ran fine, it was parked for one month, and now is getting no fire from HEI distributor. It has good power to the battery terminal. Could it be the coil, pickup coil or module?

C_: I have had this problem three times on HEI distributors, and it's been the module every time. I don't know how you'd check it other than to change it out.

BT: The module is probably the most common problem, but I had a car in which it was the coil. There is a module checker but most service places don't have one. The pickup seems to be my third choice.

MA: I have had my inductive pickup go bad. It would cut out when the vacuum advance operated, then cut back on when the car lost vacuum. Unhooking the vacuum hose pinpointed the pickup. Sounds to me, though, like your problem is the module. By the way, since my ignition would cut out then come back on, I blew up both of my mufflers trying to get back home.

KT: I had a similar problem and it turned out that the voltage was arcing down through a crack in the rotor to the mounting plate below. High voltage can make some big jumps, especially if the plugs and wires are old.
