Probably Not

D._. :   I have a leaking rear transmission seal. At first it only leaked if the car was not routinely driven - once a week. However, I have replaced it and now it leaks driven or not. The car is kept in a basement garage and I wonder if the dehumidifier could be causing the seal to dry out.

G.M. :   When you replaced the seal, did you inspect the yoke for grooving where the seal rides? The yoke should be smooth without grooves. I do not think a dehumidifier would effect it. There might be a repair kit available to sleeve the yoke, much like the repair kits for harmonic balancers with the same problem.

D.B. :   It is also possible that the tailhousing may have a groove or scratch around where the seal goes in the housing. I have seen rearend axle seals leak from this after being replaced. Remove the seal and inspect for marks. If there are any marks then file or sand them smooth. Put a small amount of sealer around the outside of the new seal and install. I use GMS, which is available at any GM dealer.
