Several.

    DH: I need to know what rearend and transmission came stock on '72 Chevelle 2-door, 350ci.

    TM: The rear end was a 2.73 and the transmission was either a TH350 or a TH400.

    SM: My '72 came stock with a 350 4bbl, TH400, and 3.23 12 bolt rear. Also when I had to replace the u-joints, I had to get a special OEM one for the rear joint. Apparently, the shaft is a big block and the rear-end yoke is a small block. That's the way it came stock.

    MA: It also depends on what the owner wanted. I am sure there were several options. Check the VIN?

    CM: According to the brochure, (if you read between the lines) the L65 2-barrel engine came with 10-bolt rearends regardless of transmission; the L48 4-barrel came with 12-bolt rearends (at least with the manual transmissions). I have also heard that very late in the '72 run they began using the revised '73 type 10-bolts in some applications.

    As for transmissions, the L65 used the Saginaw 3 and 4-speed, and the TH350.

    The L48? I'm 99% sure the 3-speed floor shift was the Muncie 3-speed (2.42:1 1st); Pontiac, Olds and Buick also used this transmission from probably '65 through '72. Chevy only used it in '71 & '72, after using the Borg-Warner T16 from mid '65 through '69 as their heavy duty 3-speed.

    As for the 4-speed? In '71, as in '69-'70, they used the Muncie 2.52:1 unit; but in '72 they probably switched to the Saginaw. That's what they did in Novas & Camaros for sure. The automatic with the L48 was factory TH350. Only the Corvettes & Z28 350's used the TH400.

    Axle ratios (std.):

    L65 / 3-speed. - 3.08;

    L65 / 4-speed. - 3.36;

    L65 / auto - 2.73;

    L48 / 3-speed. and 4 -speed. - 3.31;

    L48 / auto - 2.73 (probably 10 bolt, but it may have been 12 bolt)
