Engine Spit

    66's Celebration of Salivation

HF: My 1966 Chevelle has a 350ci and a TH350 transmission. It spits oil out of the back of cylinder #8. What could be wrong?

GM: If you have oil on the exterior of your engine back around the #8 cylinder, it probably has a bad valve cover gasket. Oil will collect on the head under the valve covers at the #7 and #8 cylinders. This is a low point because the engine is tail down instead of level. Possibly you could have a warped valve cover or a leaking rear intake manifold gasket. You might want to check to see if your crankcase ventilation is clear, ensuring that you have a way to release crankcase pressure. This will be either a breather- type oil filler cap or a hose from your valve cover to the breather.
