ACES Chevell~abration 2000 |
|
As Chevell-abration continues to grow each year, the competition for a "Top 3" award becomes more formidable. Each registered participant is given a ballot in their registration package, and asked to vote on their favorite Chevelle in each category. After tallying the votes, special recognition plaques are awarded to the Top 3 vote-getters in those categories. Additional awards are also presented for People's Choice and the President's Pick. Congratulations to all the "Top 3" recipients at this year's Chevell-abration!

People's Choice Award
Decided by the participants, the People's Choice award is presented to the single Chevelle that garners the most votes in this popular category. The award is proudly sponsored by PUI, manufacturers of quality interiors for most classic musclecars. This year, the award goes to Randy Jones (66 Chevelle Pro Street)
President's Pick
Okay, this is a subjective call... no doubt about it! But the recipient of this award is the Chevelle in attendance that ACES Prez, Chuck Hanson, would most like to take home and park in his own garage. The stunning, 4000-mile '70 SS454 with the LS-6 option, belonging to Scott Spiczka, is unquestionably an example of Chevelle muscle any ACES member would be proud to call their own. Look for an upcoming feature!
Cover Car Awards
Each year we present a framed CHEVELLE WORLD cover and certificate to ACES Members who've had their Chevelles featured there.
(L-R) Ken Memmel, '64 2dr wagon; Rod Mardiros, '66 Pro Street; Chris & Richard Fudge, '65 Z-16; Nick Lewis, '69 SS396; Bob Macy, '65 Z-16; Terry Gunter, '65 Z-16; Lee Stickney, '66 SS396; Bob Ravenscroft, '71 Heavy Chevy.
Congratulations on your accomplishments!
Time for a' Change
One of the most popular of our participant events is the face-to-face competition of the Tire Changing contest. There are individual classes for men, women and children, and a Tag Team competition amongst the various ACES Associate Clubs who are willing to put their best tire tool twisters on the line. The pace is fast and furious, the crowd is loud and rude, and there's only one thing to keep in mind...Don't let your lug nuts!
Sponsors for the Tire Changing contest are Coker Tire and Wheel Vintiques, who provided a pair of SS wheels and repo Firestone Wide Ovals for the tire-changing fixture. They also generously donated a set of redline radials for the Men's winner, and a full set of SS wheels (including trim rings and caps!) for the Women's winner. The Tag Team Champs got bragging rights and a chance to defend their honor next year! ![]()
They've Got Some Pull!
No matter what the situation, it's always good to have a little extra "pull" when you need it. And in the case of the Team Tug-O-War, that extra pull better come from a good anchorman! Easily the most strenuous activity of the entire weekend, quite a few ACE Associate clubs failed to field a team because they were more afraid of pulled muscles than pulling on the rope.
Nevertheless, The Maryland Chevelle Club stepped up to defend their title as last year's champs, while the Mid-America Chevelle Club, the Peach State Chevelles and the Mid-South Chevelles did their best to yank the grass out from under them!
When all the gruntin', groanin', and sweatin' were over, the Mid-South team stood victorious as they out-pulled the Maryland bunch in an exciting matchup of the heavyweights. The gruntfest drew a huge crowd and boisterous reaction from them each time a favorite team would fall by the wayside. It was tremendous fun, and everyone had a good time. And believe it or not, nobody had to call the ambulance, and not one dab of liniment was needed by the competitors! Kind of a' Drag
In this fast-paced world we live in, when was the last time you were rewarded for being last? Well, if you lined your Chevelle up for the Slow Drags, that's exactly what would happen! After realizing that the Chevelles with clutches had a distinct advantage over automatics, the course was reconfigured this year...to run downhill! And in the interest of actual side-by-side competition, the course was also converted to two lanes.
Needless to say, things were quite a bit more interesting this year, even though the rules remained the same regarding keeping the car in motion and no use of the brakes!
Of course, winning the Slow Drag shootout was not without its rewards. Again, Mickey Thompson Tires sponsored the event, and generously donated two sets of DOT-legal sticky street slicks to each of the winners in the men's and women's categories. Ya know, we kinda like the idea of winning by coming in last!
It's All Downhill From Here!
Everyone likes to race. The problem is for some it's just not financially feasible... not everyone has the budget of John Force. For others, it's simply a matter of legalities... it's tough to get behind the wheel when you don't even have your license yet. So we came up with some car-to-car competition that was easy on your wallet, even if it didin't have much in it besides some crumbled coupons and a few old phone numbers.
The die-cast races took place on a 20 foot long gravity ramp, with door handle to door handle racing between favorite 1/18th-scale die cast models in any favorite body style available. Granted, the speeds of these scaled-down Supercars never approached anything close to the speed limit, but the whole deal was fun, affordable, and fairly exciting. Every time a Chevelle beat out a "Brand X" model to the bottom of the ramp, the crowd would let out a cheer.
The secret seemed to be the right kind of axle lube, skinny tires, and a heavy body. Ballast could be added to increase mass up to 2 lbs, 4 ozs, and several of the racers were spotted filling the interiors with rocks or anything handy to give them an advantage.
