Comments: I have a 72 chevelle with 4 wheel drum brakes. I was wondering if anyone could tell me the easiest donor car/cars for a 4-wheel disc brake conversion. I want the largest rotor I can get for the front(11" or 12")and it still has the orginal 10-bolt rearend so if there is a car that has a 12-bolt rearend and rear disc brakes that will swap easily, that would work great. I would appreciate any info. (even aftermarket kits if you have prices for them)
Thanks,

Comments: I own a 1972 Chevelle Malibu Convertible. It has a 350 in it, with performer rpm intake, Quadrajet 4bbl, stage 2 cam, headers, Flowmaster 3 chamber exhaust, and a TH350 tranny with B&M shift kit. I use my car as a daily driver, and like to do a little street racing once in a while.I am rather fast through the first two gears, and don't come accross too much problems there. My problem is third gear. Once I hit third gear, I just keep getting passed. Does anyone have any suggestions for my third gear blues? I am considering going to a 1600 stall converter, and a 3.76 rear gear. Thanks --Matt- Tuesday, December 29, 1998 at 09:12:06 (PST)

Comments: My son and I just purchased a 72 Chevelle Malibu for his first car. The car is clean with very little body damage, does need paint. It has a 307 engine, holley 4 barrell, edelbrock manifold, headers, flowmaster exhaust, and a 411 rear. The interior is emaculate except for the split bench seat. The engine has 99,000 miles but runs great. the auto trans shifts correctly and feels tight. I believe it will ba a great first car for my son. We paid 2,000. for it. Just wondering if this was a reasonable price, not that it matters now, the bug has bitten. Really looking forward to fixing it up. Can anybody suggest which books might be the best for getting us started on restoration. Thanks- Thursday, December 17, 1998 at 20:41:46 (PST)

Comments: I own a '72 GMC Sprint (ElCamino)
350/350 standard trim.
Very good body,needs little work.
Problems: spent $200.00 to have hinge pins & bushings replaced and doors adjusted..still sounds like I'm riding outside the car.
Also, the rear window has been sealed twice, and I still get standing water behind driver's seat.
The car runs like a top (90 k mi.) but the front ends sloppy.
Look forward to hearing from anyone with advice.
Thanx!

Comments: I have a '72 Chevelle that I just put a new Performer RPM cam and intake on and also a new 750 cfm carb all on top of a 350. My problem is that I couldn't wait to get out and play around. Well I did, and I broke the rearend. I would like to find a 10 or 12 bolt, but a friend told me to put a ford 9 inch under it.
My question is: how hard is it to convert a ford rearend to my chevelle or should I stay with a GM rearend?
Please let me know or call 814-725-7354.

Comments: Convinced the better half to let me bring home a seriously abused Malibu. Got it with weak and noisy 400SB/350TH. Body is disgusting. Promptly blew the motor and proceeded to make it "built to the hilt". Should now be making a clean 400 horse. Shift kit for the trans. Still has 2.73 one legged rear end( car was OE 350/350TH, 2 barrel, A/C). Interior is in fairly good shape. A/C is gone. Oh well, still has windows... Plans include a new rear and custom trunk/wheel well area sheetmetal work. Any one in this corner of KS? Lets hook up and talk Chevelles!- Friday, December 04, 1998 at 22:11:48 (PST)

Comments: Hey Earthlings, I found a 72 chevelle malibu 4 door sedan that after a little armorall and alittle chrome polish the interior is showroom quality, However , I want to put an SS hood on it and put a nice coat of paint on it. It still has a ggood flat hood but I like that hotrod look. Do ya think it would be tacky? I put air shocks and duals on it . Still has original hubcaps. I want to put original keystone klassics on it if I can find a set. anyone help? I have all original papers, handbook, window sticker, original bill of sale, protecto plate, and M.S.O. this car has never been titled in any state. Any way I'm having fun. It only has 19000 miles on new engine and only 97000 orig. miles. detailed maint. logs with shop invoices clear back to 72. all I did was change the oil and trans. fluid and filters now I'm driving it every day. One previous owner and she died in 95, Bless her heart, been in a garage since then. The best part, $1500 cash on the spot. and I drove away. The daughter was having an estate sale. Comments: I have a 72 SS 454 convertable. I have been working on it for the last 10 years. I am ready to paint the car and I am torn about what colors to use. The car is original in dark green, white stripes, white top and white interior. I still want to keep it the original green but I would like to go to a beige or tan top, interior and stripe. The car is all original except for a set of headers and 2 1/2 inch flowmaster exhaust, air conditioning, tilt colum and power windows. I took the body off and detailed frame and body to the max. The motor is # matching and is totaly rebuilt. I built the motor stock with just a RV type cam because I wanted a nice driver not a race car. I'll have at least $15000. into the restoration by the time I'm done. I'm not planing on selling the car and I know the car has to be worth some good bucks but I don't want to blow it buy not going with the right colors. Would I be making a big mistake by keeping the original color of the car and changing the color of the interior ,top and stipes?- Monday, October 12, 1998 at 21:50:09 (PDT)

Just wondering if anyone had any tips, comments, or gotchas that I might encounter, if so dop me a line...
I'll have pictures on my site for progress, as soon as I start that is...- Sunday, September 06, 1998 at 06:30:47 (PDT)

The fresh 350 has been running perfect, but now it doesn't want to stay running when I put it in gear. It idles fine in park/neutral, but when its in gear it spits, sputters, and cuts out. I checked the distributor, rotor, plugs, plug wires, and I put a bottle of STP water remover in the gas but it still runs like crap. I'm thinking its my carb (Carter Q-jet), but I'm not sure. In the trunk, the oval floor pan inserts are loose and there is a slight amount of surface rust (no bubbles). Comments: Hey Dave @ Port Orchard Wa.,
If you have a heavy chevy that's great! Keep it all original. Those are really good cars. General Motors at the time was trying
hard to keep up with California smog control laws. Heavy Chevy was one of the last SS chevelle want to be's. However it is important to chevelle history. Hang on to that car it will be worth a lot of bucks some day if not now. As for the rust, it depends on how much and where it is located. If the rest of car is in good to excellent shape, you should get at least $7500 to $9000.00 . Good Luck- Monday, August 17, 1998 at 21:28:03 (PDT)

Comments: I am a 20-year-old college senior and I am no stranger rebuilding and restoring classic vehicles (in fact, that's how I spent my childhood). I just bought a 72 Chevelle in June '98 for a VERY reasonable price and have already began to restore it back to original condition (well, as original as I can get it). It has all SS emblems, but its not a true SS. It is originally classified as a Malibu w/ 307-2bbl, but it has a fresh (3000 miles) 350-4bbl/350 trans now. I did run some numbers and it does have the original air conditioning (still ice cold), interior, and various other little parts. Since everything about the car screams SS except the numbers, I'm going to go ahead and restore it as an SS. Any restoration suggestions or info about parts would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.- Monday, August 17, 1998 at 08:32:58 (PDT)

I'm restoring a 72 elky to be a daily driver. Do NOT try to use a Chevelle frame for your elky. The elky was built on the sedan frame, not the coupe, and probably has some different holes and mounting points for various components. There are several scrapped elkys here in S. Texas that likely have decent frames. Email me for some names of different salvage yards. However, be aware that they will probably not remove it for you; this will definitely be a DIY job.- Friday, August 14, 1998 at 07:02:42 (PDT)

Comments: In reply to Scott in Florida regarding manual or automatic trannys made for 1972's. Scott, some of the chevelle restoration
books show the number of engine sizes like 327's sold with a number of cars made. Usually their broke down into categorys of style of motors made with a number of cars made for the particular year. Because trannys can be optional it would be difficult to trace the number of manual v.s. automatics sold with the cars. Here's what I recommend if your willing to spend the time. Some where at general motors some one knows these statistics. Try writing to G.M. headquaters to find the info. My
bet is they may not be able to give you the info because the info
is too far spread out. Good Luck- Tuesday, August 04, 1998 at 20:49:11 (PDT)

Comments: This one is for sooperdave@yahoo.com last July 24th. You mentioned you had a chevelle with extensive front end damage ?
You may be able to have the frame straightend out fairly easily
if it is in the front end only, firewall to front bumper only.
If you need to take the body off and switch frames with a monte
carlo you have this will be more expensive to you. Try to keep
all your parts frame, interior, motor, trane all original if you
can, you will be glad you did in the end. Find a actual chevelle
frame if you need to, they are availabe. good Luck- Saturday, August 01, 1998 at 21:47:22 (PDT)

10 bolt 2:73 ratio. This has been an extremly long process, but it's nearing completion(those that have been here will understand the 1000's of hours these projects take).Things I've done:repaired floor, trunk, sandblasted entire underside and freshly painted.Took out the glass sandblasted around the frames n painted n put new in.Bought southern, doors, fenders and cowl hood.Pulled the motor down and put in a set of rings and cam. And much more...I will have a lot of pride when this is finished. For this summer it will go in black primer and next it'll be red with blk.stripes. Comments: Several years ago while checking out a late model (78 El Camino) for a daily driver, the 78 owner showed me his 72. To make a long story short I bought both. More on the 78 on the 73+ page.
This is a 72 SS 402 Auto, AC, bench seat column shift. While driving this car home and getting gas I saw a 72 El Camino for sale on the door of the gas station. This one was asis or for parts. I looked at this one and bought it also. Non SS but had tilt, buckets, console, etc. I must be crazy, I bought 3 El Caminos in one day.
Making "MY" car out of the 72 SS. Keeping it of the period but modifying it to be like I would have ordered or wanted. Swaped buckets, tilt and other important things from the non SS, spent $400 on heads, a rebuilt starter and sold the non SS for what I paid for it.
This has grown into quite a project. Doing a frame off restification replacing all moving parts with new and better, keeping as original looking as possible. Car description/plan below:
1972 SS, BB, TH400 Auto, PS, PB
buckets w/console
tilt w/ sport wheel
Orgiginal Gulf Green Met (code 43) w/ green vinyl top
White stripe
White interior
Functional cowl hood
Persistence and patience pays off. I have acquired all new NOS quarters and fenders locally. I buy a local weekly want adds book and "read it". You never know what is in the adds. Found the right quarter in an add for a LS7 engine (which I bought also). Prices have been much less than suppliers and right NOS quarters are almost impossible to find. Will replace all floor pans and other things as required. Have accumulated much extra stuff and continue to buy when I see a deal. You never know what you will need.

Comments: My 16 year old son and I have just picked up a 72 (we think)SS el camino. The vehilce is badged with SS logo on sides and fenders. It's in bad shape i.e rust etc. It has a 350 engine but doesn't look original. It's to be our project for the next dew years. I have a few questions: 1) how do I find out if this an SS and what constituted the SS version of the El Camino? 2) Where is the best place to find shop manuals and restoration manuals? 3) Sheet metal and interior parts, are they difficult to find? As you can see from my questions we are amatures in this undertaking. Any help would be greatly appreicated.- Saturday, April 04, 1998 at 18:45:05 (PST)

Comments: My wife and I just purchased a '72 SS 454. We did extensive research to ensure it was authentic. It has been beautifully restored right down to the splatter paint and spare tire stickers in the trunk. The engine is a 1995 GM Goodwrench 454 factory replacement. It still has the original TH 400 tranny. It is maroon with a new white vinyl top. We are unsure how much the car is really worth. We paid 12,000 for it. Even if that was a little high, we love the car. If anyone has an idea what its value is, please let us know.- Saturday, April 04, 1998 at 08:38:25 (PST)

Comments: My 21 year old son and I have just bought a '72 Chevelle Malibu, 307 cid with Powerglide transmission. Original color was ugly "pea green", but it's been re-painted a dark green in 1995. Interior still is the original color however. It's had some aftermarket stuff done to it, like an Edelbrock intake and 4 barrel which I just rebuilt. Next step is to to rebuild the front end and braking system. Eventually I'd like to exchange the tranny for a console shifter and take out the benches for buckets, and complete the interior. Original restoration is definitely not in my plans. I'd really like to just get it set up for weekend driving and cruising. Any information appreciated on the transmission swap and potential problems, etc. It's a good strong runner with negligible rust. It will remain garaged so I don't forsee future problems there either. Probably a nice 5 year project car (and wallet drainer!).- Sunday, March 15, 1998 at 19:28:25 (PST)

Comments: I have a 72 Chevelle that I have restored over the past year and a half. The body was in excellent shape as the car came from California. It was a Malibu that I have converted into an SS clone. I have put in a Monte Carlo guage dash, a tilt wheel, moved the shifter to the floor with a complete new interior and original floor console. I have also put in a 12 bolt posi. The car has a 350 with a 350 turbo that had been rebuilt before I got the car. I don't know what was done on the inside but it does have an Eldebrock hi-performer manifold and carb. It also has headers and a Flowmaster exhaust system. It sounds great and runs great! However for really no good reason I want to find a big block to replace the 350. I should mention that I am 48 years old and when I was in Viet Nam I ordered a 72 SS Chevelle that I picked up the day that I got home. It too only had a 350 with a 3 speed on the floor, for insurance reasons. Now! I want my big block. What I need is some help and or advice. I really would like to locate and rebuild the engine myself but I know that I would definitely need help. It's just something I would like to do at least once in my life. Also I have located a 396 325hp out of a 66 Chevy. It is a 2-bolt main. I ahve also located a 396 350hp that the oner told me was a sleeved engine. Is this good or bad? Does that mean it has been rebuilt before?I apologize for taking up so much space but I've got lots more questions that I'll get to another time. Thanks! for all you Chevelle fans out there, now that I've found you I hope to pick your brains.
