Email: <ACLineman@aol.com>
Location: Linwood ,NJ,
Comments: Hello,
I recently purchased a 1969, 396/375hp 4-bolt engine to install in my 69 chevelle,I was told the engine was rebuilt about 15 years ago and has about 2 break in hrs. on it,(Found it at a yard sale of all places, and paid 350.00 I think I SCORED!)
My problem is it came with no heads, well he gave me two sets of closed chamber heads( not on the motor)cast #3917215 and 3904390. I think the engine has Closed chamber pistons. Can you tell this from the following piston number?
The set up is as follows:
block casting 3955272
Series&prefix# T0417JD
Piston # GM TRW 3881456
Crane Cam Fireball# 326 Solid lift

As mentioned above i'm sure the heads I have are NOT compatable (to much compression)for this set up.Which heads do you recommened? As far as I can tell, the pistons have a dome volume of 39.5cc,a .352" dome and if I use 109.4 cc heads, it will give me a compression ratio of about 10.59 to 1,according to the info I got from TRW.
All the manufatures of cylinder heads I've seen list a high number cc rating and i'm REALLY confused as to which head I need to get the 10.59 compression ratio.

As far as I can tell, the orignal head cast # is 3919840
(RECTANGULAR PORT - Valve size 2.19 intake, 1.88 exhaust)Which will be impossible to find,so what "new head"will give me that set up?

Any info you can provide will be a MAJOR plus, cause i'm getting close to getting this thing done and I DON"T want to screw it up now.

Thanks in advance, Harry
Linwood,NJ
PS , What is the a formula for calulating the Compression ratio? It must be with the cc head rating, cylinder volume, stroke, piston dome and gasket.

Comments: Hi Team,
Unbelievable website! Great info.
Few guys evry have the chance to drive their fantasy car. But at 29 years old I have the opportunity to have the 1969 Chevelle Malibu that belonged to my uncle for so many years. Originally it had a stock 307, two barrel carbuerator, etc. My uncle had me to start disecting the engine when I was 17 as were going to start rebuilding the engine. My uncle lost his job and their went the dream. Now I have the opportunity to rebuild and I am a little bewildered on where to start. I am a complete novice in all areas of auto restoration. So I will just fire off a couple of questions:
1. Did the 69 malibus ever come equipped witht the 350 engine?
2. If so how much horsepower did they produce?
3. If I simply wanted to replace the 307 with a 350 where would be the best place to purchase from and how much are they going to run?
4. If my goal for the car is to simply make it a daily driver with these parameters:
-350 engine
-rebuild exsiting transmission
-dual color (butternut yellow, black hardtop) paint job
-new tires and wheels(corvette rallies)
-and generally everything else that will have to be restored with a car that has sat in garage for nearly 20 years!
What would you estimate that I be prepared to invest?
Any information would be greatly appreciated.

It is a 2 door hardtop. From what I have been told the engine has an original "racing" cam from the factory in it (rare?). Someone also mentioned that there is something unique about the inside of the hardtop talking about the vinyl and asking me when we replaced it, we never did, it's original also. This car was bought strait off the showroom floor in Detroit in 69. Does anyone know anything about the potential uniqueness of this car? Also, I'm trying to sell it and need a solid selling price. Any help would be greatly appriciated. thanks

Also, can you confirm the names of these parts, located

I used to drive it up until about 8 years ago when it went into the garage and hasn't moved since. Rather than just junk it I thought I'd see if anyone has an interest in some parts. Everything is original but the body has rust. I haven't started it in 8 years but some of the chrome is good and other pieces certainly are usable for someone for their 69 Chevelle. When I was driving it, it had good pep but was burning a small amounty of oil. email me and let me know what you need. (trail_walker@hotmail.com)

Comments: I want to tell you about Tina. Tina was mine a long time ago. She was as
fine as fine can be. Turns heads? You bet hell she would turn heads no
matter were we ventured. She was one curvy broad. She was da Bomb. I
couldn't fathom the day we would ever part. Sometimes things can happen and
circumstances fro things to happen you never would have planned. Fourteen
years ago I had to part with my Tina a very sad day indeed. Over the years I
have though often about fond memories of the times we had together. I also
though that ours paths would never cross again. Back in those days I used
to live about two miles down the road at my parents house. They still live
there as they have since 1967. My father called me the other day and told me
she was residing in the new small development right across from their house.
I was stunned, slightly intrigued. I was surprised to hear she was even in
are area. Without even a thought I was in my truck headed for a visit. As I
Drove I wondered what I would find. Time can be beauties worst adversary.
would she even look anything like I remember. As I rounded the corner of the
cul-de-sac. I could see her out in the yard. I pulled up and got out and
stood for what seemed like minutes but was probably just a few seconds. Yes
she was a little out of shape. Yes her skin didn't shine like I had
remembered. Time had taken from her as it always does. In my eyes though she
was as beautiful as the day I lost her. I walked up reached out and touched
her and said ( How have you been baby, Its been a long time.........)

Guys if you have a special gal, never ever let her go. Its a very rare thing
that you get a second chance in life to get her back.

There is one small rust spot on the bottom corner of the left door. I was wondering if someone might be interested in this vehicle as a daily driver or a project. I drive it only when it rains,so it sits alot and I HATE to see it sit. If you are interested in e-mail Me

The car was painted the original silver with the exception of rally stripes down the SS hood and trunk. It has a black vinal top. Nothing has been done to it since the late 1970's except new 3" stainless steel pipes with Flowmasters and a transmission rebuild. It's in great shape and all I have to do is fill it up and drive it.

She has a little rust on the quarter panels but other than that the body is in perfect shape. The paint isn't very old. It has bench seats but I want buckets. I haven't been able to find any yet so if any of ya'll other chevelle freaks have any to spare I would really like to buy them. In the future I am planning on putting is a 427 big block but right now I will just stick with my 350. The car is pretty quick except the tranny slips when I actually jump down in it. My favorite thing to do is out run any kind of ford I can. Even though non have given me a challenge yet. It has an Edelbrock Aluminum Intake and 600 cfm carb, and when the back barrels open they scream. Well thats all for now.

I'm planning on changing the motor to a 307 or a 327 and a TH350 trans. I'm going to change the blue paint to garnet red. I'm also going to street it out and build a very fast smallblock (whatever it may be) and that is my plans. Comments: I have a 1969 chevelle SS malibu 396. The car originally came with the muncie four speed, which I still have, and the big block 396. I'v been working on this car for almost three years and I'm just about done with it.
I've replaced the 396 with a 468 rat that I had built in a local machine shop, along with a turbo 400 tranny that came out of a 70' chevelle, but it's been beefed up with all the hardened goodies. To make it get there a little faster I put in a set of 4.88 gears with hardened axles, and re-located the shocks for better traction. The mouse under the hood has been dyno'd at around 850 horses, so I hope that will get my blood pumping when I step on the gas.
This is wrapped outside with all new fenders and emblems on the front, and the back dosen't need a thing, and it's still all original. I manages to keep the car street legal with all the lights, and markers in perfect working order.
If you ever need a place to find a good race, then there is plenty of room for one more around this area, because there are plenty of ford lovers around.
Chevy owners rule, while all the rest druel!!!!!!!:-)

And it now has a 10 bolt rearend, if I plan on running between 550 and 600 HP should I have a 12 bolt installed. Do any of you recomend the change to the four speed? my interior is black which is nice, all pretty much stock interior expet for a painless switchboard, 5inch phantom moster tach with shift light, the racing seats, and the back seat is gone, the tubs needed room i also fabbed a sheet of aluminium to take up that spot of emptyness

I have mounted it where I thought it should be and after running the cable to the trans (350 turbo)and hooking up the brackets using the second and third holes starting from the back on trans it won't shift properly. I can only pull it down to about nuetrual. This is my first muscle car that I've been working on.So as you might be able to tell I need help from time to time with it. Good thing they have sites like these. Because it's been more than helpful on many occasions. Any help or suggestion would be greatly apprecaited. It's about the only thing left to do besides getting it painted and would just love to be able to back it out of the garage and drive it around the block after 4 years of working on it.

Thanks Larry

The paint is silver on the bottom like most of the 69 Malibu's I've seen, The body is a dark maroon, and the roof is painted white (not vinyl) just white paint. Can anybody tell me where to find out if this is the original paint scheme for this car. I've never seen it before. Also, where could I find out how many 69 Malibu's had a 350 4 barrel/350 turbo trans and a 12 bolt rear end? Again this sounds kind of rare. As does the white vinyl interior on this car. Most I've seen/owned have been blue, green, black, or tan.

I restored the interior, steering (except steering box), suspension and coils, exhaust, brakes and drums, and I put a new Holly carburator on. I replaced the timing chain and push rods when the timing chain broke going to MA. It is a CA car with air conditioning and tinted windows. There isn't much rust but I want to repaint it, put a new front grill and bumper on, replace the trunk because of a rust spot where the Chevelle symbol is suppose to go, get a new dash, replace the air cond. motor and get a freon charage, there's also a small piece of molding missing on the front quarter. Anyway, I'm thinking of driving it back to CA in April '01 or sell it in MA as is. I really don't want to sell it!

The plastic gauge covers were scratched up to the point where you could barely make out what the gauges showed. Every glass shop that we consulted said that there was no way to fix it, but there is a way. All that you have to do is go to your local jewlery store and ask them for some rouge. Then, using a buffing wheel, this will take the scratches out. I just thought I would try to save any other person that has this same problem some time.

Comments: My car is a 1969 Chevelle 4 door Deluxe 300. It is a light blue exact shade I have no clue as this is my very first car period. But it has 49,121 original miles and there is no rust a few dings from the previous owner but the main problem is the interior it is really in good condition except the front bench seat. The previous owner was a large person and when ever he got into the car he would slide into the seat which has taken its toll on the fabric. On the top it has become separated from the vinyl and I don't know if it can be repaired or replaced or what to do. If anyone can help me figure out what to do or give me some advice on fixen her up I would appreciate it. Thanx

Comments: I have a 396 SS 4 speed. I would like to do a complete restore. however it does not have a matching engine. Before I start I would Like to find a matching numbers car. It must be a Dayton Yellow, code 76, mine is. Does anyone know how many cars were painted Daytona Yellow? In 68 I ordered my first new car. It was a 69 SS ,396, 375 hp, 4 speed, Black interior, buckets, console, chambered exhaust, 76 over 76, I didn't order power steering because I didn't want to give up the hp. The car I have now is almost a match but is a 350 hp car and originally had a black vinyl top. The only cars I've found for sale are big dollor cars that are not exactly what I'm looking for. I would be willing to pay for a car that matched my original car.

Subject: Holy Mountain Goats Batman! Ram Air Chevelles!

Mark:

A Ram Air '69 set-up cobbled together from a Buick GSX eh? Coool!, perhaps congrats are in order for "the retrofit of the year" award. Almost sounds like material for a short feature article in Car Craft or Hot Rod circa 1972! So where did you duct the hoses to?? the openings in the front bumper next to the turn signal lamps? Were you able to use the Chevy chrome open element air cleaner lid for extra hipness? Hmmm... intriguing. My own matching #s 350/350 '69 Malibu Coupe is coming along just fine. I repainted it the original Sea-frost Green metallic which until recently was faded to the customary, invisible to Cops, grocery getter puke green. It actually looks really sharp again with the addition of stock SS side stripes and a fresh black vinyl top as well! The mill is tweaked just fine now as well. I had the pleasure of smoking a newer 5.0 'Stang right off the line the other night, when he thought he could just take me right out! I'm just about to finish up the interior with completely new everything and it makes the car smell like a brand new 30 year old vehicle already! Cruise Season is just around the corner along Route 66 here in Albuquerque, Cruising Crossroads of the Southwest. Remember what Bugs Bunny always said: "Gee, I guess I should have taken a left toin at Albuqoikee!!" Well, I'll be enjoying myself in A/C cooled '69 fun!, I'm actually still running R-12 in the system from some cans that have been stashed in my old man's garage for years.

Keep the faith baby, '69s Rule!

Comments: I recently purchased a 1969 Chevelle SS396. The car is equipped with the base 396/325hp motor, TH400, 12 Bolt posi w. 3.73s. The car was originally Cortez Silver but is currently VW Red, and has black interior with buckets & console. The interior is stock except for Autogage oil/water unit and an Autogage Tach. The car currently has a Pioneer tape deck which will be replaced with a Custom Autosound radio. Prior to spring I'll be reupholstering the front seats and pulling the motor for a new cam and detailing. I like the cam in the car now, but it requires a Crane Vacuum canister for the brakes, which I don't like. I'll be installing the equivalent of a 375hp cam in the spring. The seat headrests and pillar posts have already been re-dyed and are ready to go. The car is riding on SS rims and BF Goodrich all the way around. It's also equiped with an Edelbrock Performer RPM, Holley 750, Hooker Comp. Headers and GM Hei Ignition, which will be removed in favour of a stock distributor with the Pertronix Ignitor installed. For those of you in my area, hope to see you at the Bramalea City Centre, Canadian Tire at Hwy. 403/Dundas and Canadian Tire in Milton.

Comments: I purchased this car at fifteen, from my uncle, it is a true SS, minus the motor. My father had the car brand new, and sold it to his brother who took possesion of it in '77. And now in '00 I talked him out of the car for a measly $2000. Well worth a fine piece of equipment like this. Plans are for a Keith Black 454, and a total resto.

Comments: My 69 Chevelle became a member of our family in 1983,and we are the 5th owners. This car has had a body off restoration. It is an SS model black on black, but with a high horsepower 454.It is all original except for the motor, and super T10 transmission. It is presently stored in a climate controlled car bag, checked often I might add.Oops! I almost forgot, the car also has a suspension and brake upgrade, front and rear. The 454c.i.really could not be used without it. I really love to go FAST quick, but with total control. This car would have gotten me in a lot of trouble with the law 20+ years ago.

I have owned it for 23 years oringinal 307 malibu 350 turbo but after a few engine & tranny changes {which includes a 4 speed}. It now has a 396, 400 turbo, 12 bolt posi. Original bench seat colum shift, but was changed to buckets & console, then changed back to bench seat with tilt colum shift. I have installed new floors trunk should be done but not real bad. I changed to power disk brakes. Much better than those standaerd drums! It is blue with stripe down the side, 15" weld wheels , full 2 1/2" staneless exhaust with flomaster mufflers. With the 355 gears will run 13.80s in quarter mile. Has gone 12.90s wth 456 gears sticky tires.
