Comments: I have a '65 SS 327 factory 4spd. car that also came with a factory 12 bolt 4:11 posi. I actually traded a '68 "plain Jane" Chevelle for it. The guy didn't know what he had. He said it didn't run, but he had the distributor stabed 6 points off. I'm rebilding it to pretty much stock now, and I plan on keeping it for a while.

I am currently looking for original buckets ,4 spd console, and any information on front end suspension upgrades, as far as disc brakes and 2" drop are concerned. I am also interested in what size 16 or 17 inch wheel and tire combo will fit on the rear. For any one looking to add AC to their car contact Vintage Air, they have a complete package for 65 chevelle. It looks like a very clean install and cost about what original parts cost.

All original #'s match. 89k original. Paid $1,800. Was running. In the process of a slow resto. Also have a 327 300hp. Will keep the 283 but install the 327. Was it worth the $1,800?

Comments: I am looking at a 1965 Malibu SS, 283 Auto P/S, PB the body is very straight, no obvious repair or rust. Paint has many small chips, but not too bad. Interior carpet is pretty worn, could use new seat covers. Everything else is in good condition. Seller is asking $5800 firm. No air conditioning.
1. Is this too much to pay?
2. If I want to add air cond, would it be too expensive or hard to add factory correct unit, or should I go with a more modern after market setup?

Comments: In 1995 I purchased a 65' 300 dlx. 2 door post. Of course I was looking for the allusive SS, but could not find one locally. Need less to say, I settled. I was glad I did, because I found a good base for what I wanted to do.
Over the next three years, my car has had a complete front end rebuild, replaced the 230 six cyl, with a .060 over 396 packed full of the goodies, TCI turbo 400, and a 12 bolt posi. The original interior is in descent shape, but the alluminum trim is corroded. All that is left is a little body work, paint, a tilt steering column, and I will have a good runner for next years Hot August Nights.

I have misc. parts ( hood, driver fender, orig wheels & caps, etc. ). I also have a friend who has some things to sell as well ( SS dash w/ factory tach. and complete wiring harness,
heater controls, etc. ) Please Email if you are interested.

Comments: I have a 65 SS blue/blue 327/300 hp 4 spd. I've owned the car since 1990 and have done quiet a bit of work on it. A friend of mine recently bought a documented 65 SS L79 from the original owners. It's a mist blue, blue two tone, 4 spd of course, power steering, rear antenna. The interior is original and in great shape (door panels, seats, headliner). The exterior is straight and has been repainted but not a lot of prep work. Some of the exterior trim has been replaced (grille, emblems). It's a really nice driver. His question is what is the value of the car. He knows only around 6000 were produced. Please email if you have ideas. Thanks

Comments: I have a 65'SS that I was given as a father's day present. God, I love my wife and kids! It's not real pretty to look at right now, but it has a 283 bored 60 over and sleaved back to original cylinder size. She has a mild cam and a set of pyramid power pack heads, all topped of by the original 2 bbl intake and rochester 2 bbl carb. All my freinds laughed at the two barrell, till I spun the tires! It made a road trip from central Texas to north east Kansas on $20 worth of gas. I love this car but I am still learning a little here and there about it before beinning the resto. any info that can be given about the car would be great. So far what I know is that she had a 327, still has the original power glide, and was ermine white with a charcoal interior.

Comments: I've just purchased(picking it up this weekend) a '65 Malibu. It's not much but mostly straight sheetmetal, all the glass, and some misc. trim, but it's mine! A casual look at the vin shows that it's a plain jane 6-banger that came white with a red interior. Would I be commiting a great sin to put it back together like I think it should have been? I'm thinking white's a good color, but I really liked the 2-tone aqua that was in my grand-dads chevelle. I would also like to lower it and install many suspension/handling pieces. I'm fond of destroked 400's also. On top of all these mods, I hope to keep it stock appearing(at least at first glance). Is anyone willing to offer an opinion? Thanx, see ya on the road....

I put a Weiand X-celarator intake ,a Pro Flex flex fan,an Acel HEI distributer, and a 750cfm holly on the motor. It runs realy good but needs a little rust taken out of it and paint. Comments: I have been 2yrs into this resto project, and when I brought this car home my wife said what the hell is that, after looking at this car for almost 2 mo for sale and checking out the numbers on it (thanks to a few of you for all the help w/#) I bought a very rusty L-79 lived in beach area of SoCal for many years and many differnt owners, I drove the car home and it ran real well, for a very short time 2 weeks and then spun a bearing in it,when I took the engine apart I found out that it was a 327 block that had been rebuilt,870 block and casting date of 6 weeks before build date of car no deck # they had been milled off, and the motor was only 20 over in excelent cond inside, oil pump pick up was full of leafs and silcone last owner had put rebuilt heads on it 6mo earlier wonder were the leafs came from, so I decided to put the block away for now,and a 350 4 bolt 400 hp in it's place, trying to put this car back together has been a real task or should i say just gathering the L-79 parts has been unreal not one engine part of L-79 was there, but i did find the build sheet on top of gas tank and part of another in drivers seat and both confirmed L-79 option I would like to know if 870 block is correct for 65 327-350hp I know the 870 was used in Corvette, I will keep pluging away and my 2 year time table has been pushed to 4 years to be realistic it may take that long to find a air cleaner for it that I don't have to sell my house to pay for it, one thing good that came out of it I can sure do bodywork now and weld like a champ with a Mig and the plasma arc torch is the only way to go.
Thanks for reading
P.S. my wife let me give her a ride in it the other day even with the springs sticking her, so now I have her talking about new interior.

Comments: Its a convertible SS 327/300 4 speed, red on red with a black top. I bought it new in 65. It needs a new frame. Question: will an El Camino frame work with some modification? I've heard differing opinions. Some tell me that simply trimming the last 6 inches of an El Camino frame will do the trick. Others tell me that the front end of a Chevelle and El Camino are too different to be compatible. Comments?

Comments: I have a 65 El Camino (Started with an exceptionally clean 2-owner car, all original, 283 power glide) to which I have made the following changes: Rebuilt front and rear suspension with urethane bushings, boxed rear control arms, front disc brakes, power steering, 396 engine (Edelbrock intake, Holley, Hooker headers, Clay Smith cam, MSD ignition), Muncie 4 speed, Autometer tach and guages, and Weld drag-lite wheels. I just finished it in July, and I'm planning to drive it, with my 17-year old son to Hot August Nights in Reno this week. My son's car is another interesting ride: a 64 GTO with 454 Chevy, 400 turbo, Chevy 12 bolt rear, disc brakes, etc. Over the years, I've had a bunch of Chevelles, El Caminos, and GM A-body cars....I love 'em! My favorites are the 64 to 67 era.

Comments: I've owned three '65 Malibus:
Bought #1 in 1978, for $450, a turquoise SS with a 283 and powerglide, which I drove for 8 years. Loved that car! I painted it black in "82 and added yellow, orange, and red flames.
In the end it had a 350 with the same tranny. Car was killed by a drunk illegal alien, who had no license, insurance, etc., and got deported. I got the shaft.
#2 never ran. Bought it from the back lot of a dealer for $400 in '83, for parts. Still have almost all of the stuff I took off it. It was pretty trashed to begin with.
#3 is my pride and joy. It's a 65 SS converible. I bought it in '84 from a junkyard because I always wanted one. Paid $450 for it, and that was high for the condition it was in. No motor, trans, or drivetrain, no wiring, top, interior, etc. It had been sitting in the weather for a long time. I put it in storeage until the hardtop was totalled, then hauled it out and started working on it. I had to hose the old mud out of the floorboard, then I cleaned it up as best as I could. Couldn't afford the time and money to restore it, I needed a vehicle, so I took EVERYTHING from the hardtop and put it on the 'vertible, and got on the road. Eventually I got a top and painted it, made it pretty. Now I'm about ready to do a real resto. I can't wait!

I did a complete frame off restoration to it. After powder coating the frame and custome nine inch rear end with 3.70posi, I installed the engine. This is a 400 small block stroked out to a 415 prouducing around 500+ hp. Behind all this power is a rebuilt turbo 400 with a shift kit and a custome 3 1/2" aluminum drive shaft. Last mounth I placed the new painted body on to the slammed cherry frame. It is viper blue with a pearl metallic. So keep your eyes open if you ever go to the Pleasanton Good Guys show in C.A.(Sept.98)You won't miss it. All you Chevell lovers will love this one..

The interesting thing about my chevelle is that I am the 3rd owner since 1966. I purchased the car from my cousin that has ownwed it since it was a year old. I have seen many changes in the car and myself in its 32 year old history. I have seen a couple of its minor fender benders, and 1 very amatuer restoration done by students at a Vocational College 12 or so years ago hich included an full color change to the light blue from its original Danuba. My cousin has movies with the car from when he bought it including the last 20 years. Since I have owned it I have done a ground up including quarters, interior, drive train, and supension. It is now back to its beautiful dark blue with white top. It,s a driver that really turns the heads, 283 powerglide, all numbers match. Have original papper work including options booklet and steel GM warranty card. My cousin was also a swap meet juncky so I have many extra parts including an extra 4 speed counsole. Just another proud owner enjoying one of America's finest.

Comments: It was originally a red 2 door hardtop, produced about mid-year, auto on the column, standard brakes/steering, in other words- no frills. It is now a deep green with pearl and metallic exterior paint, slightly lighter green with pearl and metallic interior paint, and has a 2 tone saddle upholstery theme. I have installed power steering, power brakes, automatic on the floor w/original console, buckets(duh), tilt steering(although the horn doesn't work- I need the wiring and plastic assembly for inside the column), and air conditioning(it doesn't work yet, need the bucks to get the rest of the parts). I don't have the headliner or carpet in yet, I'm going with buckskin headliner and dark green carpet when I do. It's still in the works, and I'm using it as a driver, I don't believe in not driving a car just because it's a classic. The paint job and body work cost about $ 5500, using the best materials, I've been driving it for 6 months during the winter and just recently seen the first nicks in the paint from rocks and such.

Comments: As of Nov. 1st, I am new to Chevelles. I have many questions about my "new" car,and I'm learning fast. Car restoration is not new to me, but like I said, I am new to Chevelles. Some of my questions are: What is the biggest tire size I can fit in the rear fenders without mods? What offset is recommended? Is the same center console (Malibu SS) used for both automatic and manual trannys? What mods, if any, are needed to install a Muncie M-22 behind a 350 engine? I noticed that the 1964-65 year model El Caminos have Malibu SS or Chevelle emblems on there rear quarters. Are there Chevelle El Caminos, or do these people put these emblems on their car? Also, what is the difference between a Chevelle,Malibu, and Malibu SS? Was there ever a six cylinder offered in a Malibu SS? If anyone can help me answer these questions, I would greatly appreciate it!-Thanks

My car is medira maroon with the white interior, has a 12-bolt posi, factory tach, 4-spd (has to with the L79), AM radio with rear speaker, deluxe seat belts. four way flashers, rear fender antenna and heavy duty suspension. It is currently undergoing a second frame off (I won my share of car shows the first time). I look forward to chatting with other L79 owners. I would like to know more about the 67 and 68 (yes 68) L79's. I know quite a bit about 65's in general and the 65 L79, write with Q's for A's.
One last note: does anyone out there know how to paint the 1965 SS grill properly? All the feature cars I see in magazines have it wrong. Maybe time for a tech or resto article on that subject.

Comments: 1965 El Camino purchased new by my father and given to me after he passed away in 1978. Upgraded engine from 283/2bbl to 327/4bbl.....3 speed trans on column, bench seat, great body, never wrecked. Now in process of converting to mild custom. Orig. color is teal green but plan on using base coat/clear coat 94 GM teal green color. Planning on "phantom flames" on hood/fenders....adding buckets and custom interior but will leave chrome and details on exterior as stock car.
