Comments: I need help location parts for a 65 SS. It was involved in a head on collision. I need a fender for the drivers side, as well as a core support. I have a 64 core support and the fender (both given to me), but they are different sizes than the 65's. I live in the denver area, with its minimal classic car parts stores, and would like any advice on where I could find any of these parts, and where I could sell (for cheap) the extras i have. Thank you.

Comments: I have a '65 Malibu SS that was given, yes GIVEN to me by my grandfather. The body is not bad, except for rust in the drivers rocker, and both lower rear fenders. It has a 454 out of a '70 Chevelle, and a TH400 tranny. I am going to have a 700R4 rebuilt by a friend, and would like any info on making this swap ( what parts, whats involved, level of difficulty, etc ). I will be rebuilding the engine with GMPP LS-6 heads, rods, and rockers. I will use Comp Cams 280H Magnum cam kit, and would love to hear from anyone who has used this cam, or the XE274. I hope to have this funded by years end.

Everything bolted up fine except I have headers and the adjusting bracket for the pump is supposed to bolt to the exhaust manifold. I have an adapter bracket from the headers to the alternator but the pump bracket won't match up. Anybody have any ideas or know of any after-market brackets that will work?

Comments: Was there any difference in the '65 283 2 barrel vs. the 4 barrel, such as heads, compression, camshaft? Was there any difference in the 283 / 327 intake manifolds and carburetors? My '65 is all original but, I would like to put a original, stock appearing 4 barrel on it. Does anyone know the correct part number for the carburetor? The correct casting number for the intake manifold is 3866922, which I don't have yet either.
Any help at all would be appreciated. I plan to be in Kansas City for the Midwest Chevelle Regionals in August. Thanks!

Comments: I have a 65 2door wagon. I'm in the middle of a off frame restoration. The car came with a inline 6 cyl and luckly M-22 4 speed. I have a 454 I'm going to install in the car with the 4 speed. What I need to know is will I have to change the engine frame mounts to make this swap and if so what will I need to change this. I also need to know if anyone knows where I can find Rear side glass trim for the left & right side of car or know of some one that can restore the ones I have. A few of the trim pieces have rust holes in them and some of the edges are almost rusted away from years of setting in the weather. I would hate to ruin the car by making a panel wagon out of it. The guy I bought the car from drag raced it for years then made a everyday beater out of it to the point it almost wasn't worth bothering with. I have put new floor pans in the car and replaced the whole front clip from one of his previous driving misfortunes. I tried to buy the car over the last 15 years with no avail until he quit driving the car and let it sit for five years and almost go to waste. Well until it was going to take more time to fix it than he was willing to put in it. I'm going to restore the car in a Rod version rather than a stock because of the expense to bring it back to stock. I'm doing all the work myself except for the interior and hope to have it finished by this summer. If anyone out there can help me with the information I ask, please contact me so I can finish and enjoy this rare and classic ride. Thanks Dale Reaves

NEED A LEFT FRONT FENDER AND A "OK" FRONT BUMPER
I just built 327 350 hp L79 motor to factory spec and ran into a problem stamping the block to match the body numbers, The body plate says "Time Built Code" 12B What does this mean? I've read
the Chevelle SS Restoration Guide books but it does not tell anything about the date codes on the body plate or the numbers
stamped on the right front side of the block. The motor is nearly
ready in to go into the car, but needs to be stamped first.
P.S. I have the correct stamps and holding jig.
Any Help will be greatly appreciated,

Comments: I'm the 3rd owner of my 65 El Camino. It's white with green bench seat interior and was completely stock with the original 283 and powerglide when I bought it. The Z-16 Chevelles were so neat, I thought I'd redo my El Camino as though Chevrolet had built them in Z-16 form. I left the body and paint alone since it was straight and rust free. The interior was clean for its age, but I freshened it up with several repro interior items...even found the original build sheet under the carpet in the process! I performed the following mods: rebuilt and upgraded the front and rear suspension, lowered the car, added front disc brakes and power steering, installed a rebuilt 12 bolt posi rear with 3.55 gears, and installed a Muncie 4 speed with factory linkage. I swapped in a factory 4 speed steering column and exactly duplicated the factory floor shift opening. Installed a new tinted windshield and a new dark-tint back glass. The only deviation from a stock look is an Autometer tach and guages, later Chevelle 3 spoke sport steering wheel, and Cragar Super Lite rims. The engine is a hot-rodded 396 (Clay Smith cam, gear drive, hi-rise intake, etc). The exhaust system gives this thing a note of authority: Ceramic-coated big tube Hooker headers, 3" exhaust pipes with balance tube, 2 chamber Flow Masters, and full 3" mandrel-bent tail pipes exiting behind the wheel wells. To finish it off, I installed a pair of original 396 Turbo Jet emblems in place of the old 283 flags. It looks like GM built it this way!

Comments: I acquired a very beat 65 ragtop in 95. A friend of mine found it dieing in a back yard a few blocks from his home.We originally purchased it for parts.I am a professional auto restorer, and we got to talking about what was repairable. He felt this one was to far gone.I swallowed the bait! It has taken me 3 parts cars and every piece of aftermarket sheet metal I could find to make it look like a car again. It is now about 70% completed, just needing final body and prep, top, and interior. It has a 454/turbo400 that I'm going to swap for a 700r4 in time.So here's to blind ambition ,I guess it just goes to show you can rebuild anything if you want to prove a point bad enough . However I am glad that we have another survivor, and that this project has boosted my reputation as a restorer in our area . Anyone who may be interested in more details on this restoration ,please feel free to e-mail me.

Comments: A piece of Z16 History....
Realizing what the Z16 represents, I feel that I need to make public the details of my ownership in the event that it can help a serious collector fill in the early history of one of the mighty 201 that graced our highways. This hurts a lot....
On 9/19/66, as an 18 year old, I dragged my parents down to Hawthorne Chevrolet, Hawthorne, NJ, to place a down payment on a used yellow 1965 chevelle malibu SS-396. The price was 2595.00 and the salesman was Art Freunhofer (or close to this). I have the original invoice which I will scan in shorthy. The VIN is not on the invoice but the stock # from Hawthorne Chevrolet was 5915A. I will make every attempt to find more documentation. The car came with PS, PB, but did not have AC or power windows. It had the GM multiplex stereo system with 4 speakers.. The car had been in an accident (I found out later) and the block was unpainted. I never found out if it was a true 4 bolt. Mileage was 11,375 or thereabouts. I had the car until April 8, 1969, at which time I TRADED IT IN on a 1964 corvette at RAY and Bills auto sales, on Rt.10, Hanover NJ. My god! they were a Rambler (AMC) dealer. The car was no longer a big block.... A lifter pumped up (I still have the lifter) and the engine sucked a valve which split the number 3 cylinder like a melon. I replaced the engine with a 275 hp 327 (Quadrajet). I did run across the purchaser of the car at Island Dragway during the summer of 1969.. I remember he asked me about the clutch and told me he paid 1175.00 for it. He was racing it in pure stock and (it is amazing how details stick) and was turning about 15.1 in the low 90's with the 327 engine. I can recall a lot about the behavior of the Z16, if anyone wants details, just EMAIL me at wgodek@hotmail.com.

and I've come to one more obstacle and that is when I replaced both rear quarters I forgot to make a template of the location for the malibu SS nameplate.
I've got the assembly manual and all kinds of manuals and none shows the correct measurements. Year one doesn't even know. The only way possible is to get measurements off an original quarter panel and I don't know of any body in the area who has a original65 SS. I need both original left and right sides. The measurements must be out their somewhere I just don't know where to go.
can anyone Help. plmk Thanks, Wally

Comments: I'm finishing up my black 65 SS after a year and a half of hard work and 25000 dollars. I had originally estimated I could do the job for around 13000 dollars-what a joke. Every piece is either new or like new. It has an 88 Z28 tuned port with headers, hypertech chip, after market wiring and loads of billet and chrome. I've got a 3:70 rear with a 700 r-4 trans. the interior is red. I lack front and rear glass installation and carpet and seats all of which I have new. My only wish is to get it featured in Super Chevy Magazine. How is the easiest way to make this old man happy? Please let me know how I can get featured around mid summer.

Comments: 65 Malibu SS 2-dr. Was originally a 327 car although not sure of which "L" it was. Has a custom interior, diamond pleated buckets and door panels. The car has a dash mounted clock but an idiot light cluster. No air, power steering, or power brakes. Radio is missing. Recently, I re-did the brakes and had the radiator re-cored. New turn signal switch, wiper switch and horn parts kit installed. Color was Regal Red. Some rust in trunk and floors. I've already purchased new sheet metal for restoration and am looking for recommendations on a body shop to do the work preferably in the central MI area. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Comments: I'm the 3rd owner of my 65 El Camino, which I purchased 2 1/2 years ago as a clean local original car. When purchased, it was white with turquoise bench seat interior, and was equipped with the original 283 and powerglide. I always thought a Z-16 El Camino would have been a neat factory offering, so I re-did mine in that fashion: I've installed a hot-rodded 396 with ceramic-coated Hooker headers, 3" exhaust with 2 chamber Flowmasters, Muncie 4 speed with original linkage, 12 bolt posi rear with 3.55 gears, front disc brakes, and power steering. Additionally, I've rebuilt and upgraded the front and rear suspension, lowered the car, installed Autometer tach and guages, and installed Cragar Super Lite rims. I've installed a few reproduction interior items (found the original build sheet under the old carpet in the process!) and installed a new windshield and new dark-tint back window. I've left the body and paint as it was since the car was rust-free and straight when I bought it. I installed a pair of original 396 emblems in place of the old 283 emblems so that they cover all the original mounting holes, and other than a few bolt-on hot rod items, this thing looks original enough to have come from the factory like this!

Comments: I own a 65 Chevelle 300 Deluxe 2 door sedan which I purchased my junior year in high school, 1988. It originally came with a 230 inline six and 3 speed on the column. The original color was a light green with fawn interior. It was somewhat rusty but restorable. At one time it was modified original and now it's modified. It currently has a 327-275HP which I'm going to rebuild (again) in spring 2000 to be an L-79 clone. It has a M-20 4 speed, 10 bolt posi and Flowmasters. Other mods. include PS and PB. I did a moderate/extensive frame off 3 years ago and it's currently 65 Corvette Milano Maroon. New interior, dark saddle, is currently being installed.

This is a great web page that is really resourceful! I plan to make use of it. Always interested in other 65 owners cars, esp. sedans.
